Our hut

Location and history

Salzburgerhütte is located just below the “Langwiedboden” station of the glacier railway Kaprun at the so-called Salzburger Boden!

The hut was built in 1878 long before the Kitzsteinhorn was made accessible by mountain railways and lifts in the 1960s. Back then, a Kitzsteinhorn tour involved a two-day hike with overnight stay on Salzburger Hütte. For decades, supplies were brought in on foot or with mules. Only the construction of the glacier railway Kaprun allowed for supplies to arrive via the mountain railway and, since 2012, via a forest road.

The hut was owned by ÖTK (Austrian Tourism Club) for over 100 years until the Klawunn family (tenants of Salzburger Hütte in 1978) purchased it in 2013, continuing to run it as a hiking hut.
